Everything derives from the most powerful symbol that existed during the Republic of Venice. The Ducal or Dogal horn is the headdress worn by the Doges of Venice and carried over a white cap, similar to the papal camauro, an annual gift of the nuns of San Zaccaria.
Composed of a circular crown and a pointed cap in the back, the ducal horn recalled in the form the Phrygian cap worn by Byzantine soldiers and Duxvenezian in more ancient times.
It was carried, but in a smaller form than that of the Doge, also to crown the golden veil of the Dogaressa, his consort.
Over time the various ducal horns have been embellished with damask inserts, pearls and precious stones. Disused by the fall of the Republic, it still stands on the emblem of the City of Venice by replacing, by presidential concession, the traditional city wall crown.
